Are You Really Sure You Want To Be...

In the hospitality industry? Think carefully people, especially those who are still young. Some people assumed that this industry is a glamorous job. This is not a glamorous job after all.
I've conducted an open interview in collaboration with Taylor's College + KBS (Kementerian Belia & Sukan). We were looking for candidates who are interested in the hospitality industry specializing in Food & Beverage and Culinary. This program will take 6 months to finish and they will get a certificates by the end of the program. The candidates who are being accepted, will be enrolled to Taylor's for their theory part for 3 months and continue their on-the-job training at Hyatt for another 3 months. The best part of this program is, all expenses will be paid by government, including their allowances during the on-the-job training. And after completing their program, we as an employer, can absorb them into our permanent employment depending on their performance and potential to growth with Hyatt.
I only managed to get 2 candidates for their placement here. The problem, big problem was they can't speak English! They even didn't want to try.. What I normally did when conducting an interview, I told them try to speak in English. It doesn't matter if they're not able to speak fluently, but at least try la wey. For example, there was a guy, not only he can't speak but he didn't understand what we were saying. We asked him a simple question but he replied back in a Malay+Kelantanese, no offense to Kelantan people. People out there, if you really want to be in this industry, especially in front line, you must speak in ENGLISH.
Some more, the modules prepared by Taylor's College are all in English. How you want to cope with that? Come on people, no matter how good you in your cooking or how well groomed you are, but if you can't speak the language..it just waste of time. Back to that poor guy that can't understand us, we told him exactly what are we looking for and luckily he understand. We did advised him to improve his English and try out in our next interview in 3 months time. Sigh, sad thing was, he really interested but unfortunately we also have to find a suitable candidate for us. And we can't simply take because at the end of the day, it will reflect us as a 5-star hotel.
On the other hand, the interview was tiring and the whole day was gone. Hopefully, the next interview will give something different, someone that really suits to be in this industry.
This is not a glamorous job people. No joke.
